Shui not eating since loss of Feng

Post  petes80 on Sat 22 Oct 2016, 10:41

So since the day our other angel, Feng, passed away, our remaining angel Shui hasn't eaten at all. It's been 10 days without her eating. When I feed the fish, she usually comes to the front and top of the tank as though she wants food but never actually eats, even if a bit of food floats right past her face. I've tried wafer type flakes that she used to eat before, tetra flakes, pellets and frozen bloodworm. Nothing has tempted her.

I did see her eat the day before Feng died so I can only assume it's because she's stressed/sad about losing him. She still swims energetically round the tank and is showing no other visible signs of being sick.

Is there anything I can/should do?

my angels favourite food is Artemia. I use a turkey baster to add it in different area's of my tank so they all get a chance to eat some. The angels learned to actually take it from the tip of the turkey baster .. so did my curviceps dwarf cichlids (such intelligent fish)
You could try tempting her with Artemia -although get the frozen type then there's no chance of introducing anything nasty from fresh food. Artemia is fairly light on their tummies, as it's only a type of brine shrimp, where-as bloodworm is quite rich and fatty. My lot only get bloodworms once a week but Artemia has been fed twice or three times a week when my curviceps were in full breeding mode. I know angel breeders use baby brine shrimp to feed on a daily basis

If she's stressed try cutting lighting time in your tank a little for a while. Turning the lights out can help reduce stress

Keep us posted with how she goes ... any sign of swelling in her tummy and I would start the process of adding the Octozin again. What you don't want to happen is for her to develop Hexamita too and stress is usually the trigger for it

Hi Akasha

Thanks for three advice. I kept the lights off pretty much all the time and I also did another water test and found that the ammonia and nitrate levels had increased. I think this is due to the new filter not building up the bacteria quick enough. Anyway, I did a few water changes to bring the levels back and two days ago she started eating again! She's now enthusiastically swimming up to the front and top of the tank at feeding time ready to fill up. I am still keeping the lights off for a bit too keep her stress down but she seems much better now. Thanks so much for your advice :-)

no problem at all. When you added the new filter did you add all the old media from the old filter to it? That's the best way to avoid ammonia/nitrite issues. Sometimes it means getting the scissors out and cutting up the old media to be able to cram it in but it's the best way to make sure you don't get ammonia spikes. After a month or so you can start gradually removing the old media - checking for ammonia spikes all the time.

Happy to hear the remaining angel is doing well again though. My remaining angel has got over the death of her mate now and she actually seems happy on her own.
