Angelfish in Scotland

Post  wildreddeer on Sat 18 Jun 2016, 21:24

This is an open question for anybody reading this topic.

I am looking for any angelfish keeper - breeder - or just shop keeper in the Inverness and Nairn areas.

I am aware of Simpson's garden centre. They get there fish from the Aberdeen area. Apart from them, I know of no where. Not that I am after buying any, it's more for selling. It is not to make money it's because I enjoy breeding them. But if I can not get shut of them it will be a waste of time.

I am moving at long last up there, and I was thinking of setting up again.Yes I did say I would not start again but me being me, I kept three full set ups just encase I was to start up again.

I'm moving up to Nairn, at the end of July and it would be nice to meet up with any member who lives in the area. I would even contemplate starting a Scottish section. Old members around Yorkshire from this and the older site will know what I mean.

Once an angelfish breeder, always a breeder!

I have been hunting the net now for the past few weeks and it looks like this is going to be a non starter for me to start breeding again.  Evil or Very Mad  You can count the fish shops with one finger.  Twisted Evil All the rest are Aberdeen and Dundee areas which is out of my reach. As for private sales that's a nil. Sad  They don't seem to have any breeders up here.  Shocked So if I started I'll end up with literally thousands of Angels, so to speak. It's a pity really just as I was looking forward in getting back into it. Sad So it looks like the last of my breeding set up will have to go. That's a 42" and 2 x 3 footers, all complete with heaters etc. I'll keep you updated and look forward to any offers. Buyer will have to pick up.

Wildreddeer, that's a great location and I can highly recommend it, having lived and worked there! When I moved up, I took my angels with me (well most of them, I didn't want to take too many fry just in case they didn't survive), so I never purchased any new 'Scottish' angels.

There is a pet shop (or was) on the high street in Nairn, at the top end. The fish are upstairs.
There's a larger aquatics / pet shop in Inverness, but, it's a long time ago... 20 years.
There's also a pet shop in Elgin again... 20 years.

When you live in such a place, you come to realise that your choice will be limited, often unless you order it, they won't stock it. When you do order it, it will take about a week to arrive from England. Things tend to be more expensive and the 2nd hand / 2nd user market will no doubt feel restricted too.

You might sell a few fish or you could use them in display tanks....
If it hasn't been exploited yet, there is also opportunity for aquarium rental, I had spoken to a number of residential homes in Nairn who were very interested, but I couldn't find a low-cost supply of tanks, not in the same way that you can just pick them up in Yorkshire.

Despite all that, it's a lovely seaside town, deserted in winter but buzzing in summer when all the holiday folk flock in.

I hope it works out for you, whatever you decide to do when you get there.

Also, things have moved on, most people use smartphones if they want to buy and sell.
There is a cost attached to Ebay, so people tend to use Gumtree, Facebook and free apps like Sphock, they communicate using apps like 'whatsapp', which allows picture exchange with out the huge costs of picture messaging. There is also Snapchat, but that's more of a teenager thing.

You might be familiar with some of these, but if you're not then you might be looking in the wrong place when deciding if there is a market for your fish. I suppose you'd have to do it on distance and population numbers, bearing in mind that, people in the highlands are probably willing to travel further. Your location is also on a main A road, it's not all bad and there are many visitors to the area from the wider area, who are seeking some seaside fun.

You could also ship / deliver fish within Scotland with shorter delivery times. Due to transit times from England, there is a higher casualty rate.

Anyways... again good luck.
