Is my tank too short height wise ?

Post  MerseyAltum on Tue 17 May 2016, 23:46

I stripped and cleaned out my 5 foot African chiclid tank last month to get it ready for an Amazonian type of tank with Angels.

Its an Eheim Vivalin 330.

I was a little concerned about the height wise 45 centimeters High, I know Angels like height its 330 Liter so nice volume. I think the media bacteria will have died off by now its been stripped and empty 4 weeks.

As it was a reasonably costly tank to buy I would like to re-use this tank for a nice Amazonian theme  tan, will the height cause any issues.

The tank is 151 CM long just under 5 feet! ?

Hi & Welcome to the forum.
45cm is fine for standard angels, although deeper would be preferable, but if, as your forum name suggests, you're planning on keeping altums, you could really do with a 60cm+ deep aquarium. I'd also be inclined to avoid veiltails in a tank of that depth.

My mate has been aftr a swop for his Juwel Rio 300, he does African Cichlids, the Juwel rio is 66cm so that sounds like a plan and he only lives a few doors doqn so no long journey !

i won't look atums until the tank is more matured..

Yep a Rio 300 would be ideal for Altums

Thanks tons, won't cost either of us any cash then,

Will there be any difference in bacteria in filter with him having such a high PH and will the internal
be enough 'umph' for the tank ?

I have a Vision 260 which despite being heavily stocked runs well just with the Juwel filter. However with Altums they require lower pH's & low tds, both of which inhibit bacterial growth, so personally I'd go "belt & braces" and use an external filter as well.

As to the change in pH that might well upset the bacteria, but some will probably survive and repopulate the filter more quickly than starting it off from scratch, but make certain your filters are mature & there's no ammonia or nitrite before investing in the altums.

The Vison 260 looks nice too would free up some space for me in the room I have, I may end up with two tanks lol.

Yep, I decided on the Juwel Vision 260 as well. I sold my 5foot short height tank to my mate.

A fishless cycle and will just wait it out Very Happy
