Angel Death

Post  Squidward on Tue 06 Mar 2012, 13:41

Hi All,

This morning, one of my Angels was dead.
For the past week, it has been listlessly hanging just below the surface of the water. Not eating at all.

I tried a course of Octozin and Myxazin (seperately), with no effect.

This has happened to one of my Angels prior to this.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Squidward

Hi Squidward, I a very sorry to hear this, keep your chin up and hopefully we can find a cause.

The best thing to do now is get some information from you so that we can work out what to do now.

Firstly we need the details of your tank settup and fish....
Water conditions including PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate & Temperature readings. And if possable the GH & KH readings.
Your water change & feeding regime would also help.
Details of any changes or new additions made before the Angel became unwell.
Details of what you observed during the Angels illness (eg. swam ok, white poo etc)
Sorry if this seems alot of info needed but the more info we have the more we can help.

Here is a basic first action plan if I ever find a unusualy quiet Angel:
  • Take water & Temp readings
    Check nobody is being bullied
    Do a 30 to 60% water change
    Then investigate further....

Yup, I should have known to give this info:

Firstly we need the details of your tank settup and fish....

Water conditions including PH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate & Temperature readings. And if possable the GH & KH readings.

300L tank with Angels, Rainbows, Reedfish, Plecs.
Temp:25*C
GH = 14
KH = 8
Ph = 7.5
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate 30

Your water change & feeding regime would also help.

Water change = 30% once a week (sometimes a second smaller wc during the week)
Feeding = Tetra Prima as staple. With 1 or two feedings a week of: Bloodworm, Tetra flake, Tetra crisps.

Details of any changes or new additions made before the Angel became unwell.

No new fish recently. No changes that I can think of.

Details of what you observed during the Angels illness (eg. swam ok, white poo etc)

Hanging listlessly just below the surface of the water. Not eating. Not swimming much.

Sorry if this seems alot of info needed but the more info we have the more we can help.

I understand you need as much info as possible.

Ok, I see three possable causes (other members may see other causes), Parasties, Bullying and or Bacterial infection.

If I were you I would up my water change regime a little for a month or so keeping carefull track of everybody to see they are eating well and are happy. Make sure there is plenty of oxygen in your aquarium.
Some breeders have reported problems feeding Bloodworm but you would have to reasearch that as I have no experience with problems.

Some other members should be able to offer advice when they get online.

One possibility is was this angel in the tank with the knife fish that killed your other angels, if so he may have been attacked previously but just died now of his injuries , you would not have noticed especially if his injuries were internal.

My guess would be bacterial.

I have not seen signs of bullying (though that does not mean it's not happeing)
I treat my fish every few months with Kurusi, so I would say that parasites would be doubtful

Never had a problem with bloodworm. Unless it has introduced some nasties to my tank. BUt if the packaging says Gamma Irradiated, one would assume that it is safe?

The knife was removed from the tank just under 2 months ago.
I suppose it could have been attacked with internal injuries. But there was nothing obvious to be seen by looking at the fish.

Iv Just lost on under very simelar cercumstances.
Hung around under the surface for about a week
Didnt eat
He actually looked healthy (apart from not swiming around)
Every other angel in the tank was very active.
My tank is very well filtered with plenty of areation and i know my water checks out ok
Only thing i noticed was even though he wasnt feeding his abdomen always looked as though he had just gourged himselfe which leads me to believe it was an internal bacterial infection.
These losses happen to all of us at some time. but it does not make it any easier.

his abdomen always looked as though he had just gourged himselfe
That sounds like "bloat" which can be caused by bacteria, but is often due to the protozoan Hexamita, which causes hole in the head disease.
Best treatment....
1. stop feeding
2. Syphon tank bottom to remove faeces daily
3. Treat daily with octozin
4. Ideally isolate any affected fish to reduce the spread of the disease.

Mine was exactly the same - except - not bloated.
I agree. I suspect it was a bacterial infection.

Question being, where do they pick it up from? And how can it be prevented in future?

I did treat with Octozin, but I think by the time the diease is obvious, it may be too late. Sad

Btw, appologies for numerous posts, I don't know how to multi-quote.

True, but in a minority of cases it can help, especially if feeding is stopped as soon as symptoms are noticed. Either way, it's still a good idea to treat as it reduces the risk that disease will spread to other fish in the tank,
