angels for new community tank.

Post  evan47 on Sun 21 Dec 2014, 13:39

hi, i am considering upgrading my current 90 litre community tank to a 200 litre one adding a pair (or two pairs) of angels to my existing stock of black neons, marbled hatchets, aggassiz apistogramma, bn plec, bolivian ram, 5 banded barbs and ottos.
i intend to have the angels as a centrepiece to the community but i need to know if i will/will not have compatibility issues with my existing fish.
the tank will be well planted, have plenty of driftwood and will be over filtered.
any advice is welcome. Question

The only fish I'd be a little worried about are the black neons, in general if you start with small angels and let them grow they will accept the neons as part of the tank, but an adult angel might well regard the neons as a tasty treat.

In terms of stocking capacity, that number/size of fish will be fine in 240 gallon tank, in fact they'd probably look rather lost! I'm guessing that what you've actually got is a 240 litre tank, in which case that number/size of fish would be about right....

However, in terms of water quality requirements your choice of fish isn't ideal. Angels, RTB Sharks and bristlenoses will all be happy at 26-28 C and would prefer soft, neutral or slightly acidic conditions, although none of them are too fussy. The platies prefer it slightly cooler, 24-25 C and whilst they're OK at neutral pH, prefer hard and alkaline water. The same applies to mollies, which in the case of black mollies, also do better with a moderate amount of salt in the water.
Personally I'd replace the platies with a nice red tetra such as bleeding hearts, and the mollies, assuming you were thinking of black mollies, with something like black widows or black phantom tetras. Other good companions would be corydoras catfish (check temperature tolerance, some species prefer it cooler) or dwarf cichlids such as rams, sheepsheads or apistogrammas.
