blue marble blue marble

Post  bridgegirl99 on Sun 20 Jul 2014, 12:30

On a thread on Face book, someone commented "Well you can't pair up a blue marble to a blue marble! Won't turn out nice!"

What did they mean and whats wrong with it please??

The statement :-
"Well you can't pair up a blue marble to a blue marble! Won't turn out nice!"

Forgetting blue for a minute, there are lots of different combinations that can produce a marble :-

In increasing order of black coverage :-
M/+, M/g, M/Gm & M/M

You might want to add to that gold marble combinations like Gm/+, Gm/g & Gm/Gm

and into all of the above mix you might want to throw smokey, stripeless & zebra.

In short there are a lot of different possible blue marble combinations, and in my opinion all are attractive, but some are quite different in appearance. My favourite blue marbles are M/+ - pb/pb crossing two such fish will give 50% like the parents, 25% blue silvers and 25% blue marbles that are homozygous for (have two copies of) the marble gene. These will have more black & less blue, but are still very attractive fish. If you find you prefer the lighter blue marbles, mating one of these darker marbles to a blue silver will give 100% M/+ - pb/pb fish, so even if the facebook poster doesn't like the darker blue marbles, that's not necessarily a good reason for not doing the cross.

OK thanks Rob, I shall just ignore the comment and see what happens when they decide who they fancy!
