eggs laid in community tank..what to do next?

Post  spaceage99 on Sun 24 Mar 2013, 16:01

i have just noticed eggs in my community tank, i think the pair may have laid before on a few occasions but with a variety of tank mates the eggs had no chance. I have another tank and a floating breeding tank, should i try and place the eggs into the other tank, inside the floating tank (away from the other fish)
if so, when should i do this?
i'm unsure if the eggs have been there a few hours or are currently still being laid. if they are still being laid, how long should i leave it until i remove the eggs?
any help ideas v.much appreciated

...update..
correction, they are still laying..how long should i leave the eggs before removing? how long will it take fot the male to fertilise, i have read many different opinions.
sorry, i'm a newbie with breeding angels, all help and advice welcome

Hi Spaceage,
To be honest, unless you have a separate aquarium in which to raise the fry, there's very little point trying to hatch the eggs in a breeding trap. The trap would be too small to raise more than a couple of babies, and most are designed for livebearer fry, which are much larger. Angelfish babies would almost certainly find ways of escaping to the main tank.
If you have a separate tank, then personally I'd forget about this batch and establish the parents on their own in the breeding tank. They're highly likely to try again within a couple of weeks.
If you're really determined to try to save this batch, then a tank divider would be your best bet, keep the parents & their eggs one side, and the rest of the fish on the other.

thanks for the response, i have the pair in a large community tank, the eggs have been placed in another established tank with small non-aggressive species, however, they have now gone white, which i understand to be the end of the line.. in the future, what would you recommend? it would be hard to move the pair as the tank space i have is very limited, can eggs be placed in another tank, and raised, without too many probs?
suggestions/experience welcome

Unless you have the tank space to raise any resulting fry, to be honest the best thing to do is not worry and let nature (predation) take it's course.
It's highly unlikely that you will be successful in raising the fry in a tank containing other fish, as they will undoubtedly regard the babies as a good source of protein!
