colour/genetics and sex?

Post  badger162 on Sun 17 Mar 2013, 17:09

hey, I've been told this is a female and is a 'Singapore blue' is this correct?
I assume she is female because she seemed to pair with the male behind in the photo, though sadly lost him before any eggs appeared.

Thanks in advance Smile

Hi Badger
"Singapore blue" is simply a blue fish of Singaporean origin.
There's quite a lot mixed in in that one.
Blue, pearlscale and one of the marble genes.

My guess is that it's Gm/+ - p/p - pb/pb.

Some call the combination Gm/+ gold marble silver, personally I prefer the term "light marble" which would mark yours a pearlscale blue light marble. IMO that's enough of a mouthful and much preferable to Pearlscale blue gold marble silver!

Thanks Pterophyllum that's perfect, I was told by the seller that she was bred in the UK so I assume either her parents or grandparents etc were from Singapore.
I'm looking to pair her up with a blue male to try and maintain/improve her blue and purple colours in the next generation, out of interest what sort of male would you choose and why? (open to everyone).

My choice of partner would depend where I wanted to get to and what I had available.
Personally I don't like pearlscale, so I'd probably choose a mate that wasn't a pearlscale.
I might be tempted to pair her with a paraiba sunset (aka platinum paraiba or blushing platinum), if my id for her is correct, that would give you :-
50% platinum marble ghosts
50% blue ghosts

Unless the sunset paraiba was carrying any hidden genes (many of mine are hiding smokey) which would complicate the results.

At the end of the day any blue male should give you some nice offspring.

I'm not the biggest fan of pearlscales either to be honest, the only blue males I've seen for sale (that's two in the past year) have just been blue silvers which I do quite like. I'd love to pair her up with a blue ghost or platinum paraiba though! Smile
