Simon,s Fish house

Post  Simon Marshall on Sun 13 Jan 2013, 08:33

All always good to have a read of peoples set ups. I have decided to add my details

I have a total of 16 tanks all bar two are in my fish house. the other two are in the house one is a Reef (which is not a great success) The other is a 45L in my sons bedroom which has been set up since santa bought it him a few weeks ago.

In the fish house there are 14 tanks ranging from 48x18x18

1x48x18x18
5x18" cubes for breeding
1x24x18x18
2x30x15x12
1x36x15x12 divided into 3 for breeding
2x18x15x12

The fish house used to be exclusively for breeding Discus with a few cories for clean up purposes. In resent months I have got back into my angels

At present I have 40 Discus ranging from 1" fry (not icluded in the count ) through to breeding pairs
Angels
6 Leopaldi angels
7 Manacupuru Redback Angles
breeding Pair of Koi Angels
2x Black Angels (think they are a pair but no action)
2X longfinned Black Lace (again believe these to be a pair)
8 Cory Sterbai (breeding group)
3 Dwarf Cories not sure what type
6 Cory Elegans
6 Bronze Cories

The majority of the tanks are on a central system with a 3 foot sump divided into 4 compartments. Filter media is a pre filter over the sump to catch majority of the crud before it hits the sump. Jap matting in compartments, followed by bio balls and the return pump this is heated by a pond heater.
The rest are filtered by sponge filters on individual tanks.
Water is prepared via RO or HMA depending on requirements.

That is it really any questions please feel free to ask.

Insulation

Post  TONY,S ANGELS on Sun 13 Jan 2013, 10:10

Hi simon
First let me wish you all the best with your fish house, And the fist thing i always say
to any one with a fish house ( retreat from the wife ) is i hope you put the insulation
as thick as is possible or the money will evaporate into the night sky.
Cheers Tony

Tony learnt that one the hard way, I used to have 1" polystrene and as you say the cash just leaks through the walls and roof. I stripped down about 12 months ago and installed 2" Kingspan all round and its now like a suma.

Sounds like fun. I'm in the dizzy planning stages and I shiver at the cost of materials. The planned size has been reduced because of this and I'm sure 8' x 8' will give me more than enough tank space to keep me occupied. Also I don't want to take up too much of the precious garage storage space. Wink

It will be a long term project but I aim to get the shell and a few tanks at least, in there this year. I'm making rough sketches of what I would like in racks and what I can fit in the space.

For space heating, do you guys think 1k should do a well insulated 8 foot cube? And what's the ballpark monthly increase on the leccy bill likey to be?

I have been through a bit of a dry spell with breeding, mainly due to time restraints and fish being off breeding. So HMA filters replaced stepped up water changes and feeding routine. This creates me huge issues with the Brine Shrimp hatching as well as grow on space, buy really pleased to be back busy Smile

I now have young from the following
Pair of Solid Black Angels
Pair of Zebra Veils
Pair of Platinum Koi's
Red Turk Discus
Curipeua Red

So I have sold the vast majority of my Discus and decided to concentrate on my Angels ...................................

Kinda forgot how productive they are .........SO far I have Veil Zebras . Diamond Koi x2 batches and the F1 Manacapuru crosses .......think I may well need to throw them all back in the community tank .....

How much brine shrimp do these guys eat  Razz

I know how you feel, I've just evicted one potential breeding pair from their breeding tank, as I needed to fill it with babies from another pair, this one batch is now occupying 4 tanks, they're only 2 months old, I think I'm going to need to find a couple more tanks to house them all by then of the month!
Good to see that you're letting them parent raise.

Re: Simon,s Fish house

Post  Simon Marshall on Sun 17 Aug 2014, 22:38

well we will see how they get on in my absence for 2 weeks:( I am away for two weeks with no cover in the fish house. WC's are taken care by the constant drip ....feeding hmmn looks like the filters and anything else in the tank will be the only source of food.

I have bought some holiday blocks but have seen issues with these in the past so not sure if I will use ##Any advise gladly received

Adult angels will be fine without food for two weeks, anything under a month or so old might struggle in that time.
I'm not a big fan of the holiday block foods, it's too easy to overfeed & pollute the tanks.
Live plant has infusoria growing on it's surface which can help feed youngsters, and if you choose something like ambulia or cabomba, it's fine enough that the fish can eat the plant too.

Good luck
