Keeping on top of planaria

Post  jimmyjahooha on Thu 11 Oct 2012, 21:39

Hi all,

thought i would start a post on ways that people keep on top of planaria. Ok there is the standard treatment of reducing feeding but in instances where young fry are concerned this will impact upon your feeding regime. Ok so how should/do you treat. What chemical methods have/do you use and had success with, internal and external treatments are most likely the key to treating success. Other than chemical treatments there is the ultimate way of using natures way of balance, what biological methods would you use? snails? tetras? as angels are predatory would they attack the snails or tetras?

Lets me know your thoughts,

Cheers Jimmy.

Thanks for the response, so in effect we are saying maintenance is key, what maintenance steps do you follow? this post is to help people with problems thanks for your understanding.

Do you use air/ mechanical filtration?

What is your feeding regime? once/twice daily and how much.

I am a little lazy so have a 200 gallon system with a triclkle water change to overflow, for specific breeders I some times use a sponge filter and will do 10% wc' s per day

Feeding usually 2-3 times per day depending of workload
Usually fed with beefheart prima or ZM white worm for a treat

Hi Jimmy a friend of mine uses Genchem No Planaria in his shrimp tanks so i would have thought it would be ok with fry, & he has found that it works a treat & doesnt kill his plants but he does remove his carbon filter while treating he has mentioned that he found it worked well in his discus tank also.

Hi folks,

thanks for your feedback, I have moved to mechanical and air filtration, the mechanical really helps as part of major clean It also allows for my conditions to be primed before breeding. When the fish are ready to lay eggs I remove the filter from the tank.

Yes Bulldog biozyme is usefull for breaking down organics, especially for tanks with heavy feeding such as fry.

Out of interest are planaria parasitic to fish? or do they just feast on the undigested food?
