Some of my Koi

Post  Pterophyllum on Thu 16 Feb 2012, 23:02

Lisa isn't the only one to be working on producing some nice koi
I paired this female

with this platinum marble ghost

in the hope that some of the babies would have his fins are her colour! Well, they're now about 4 and a half months old and I'm pretty pleased with some of them. The challenge is taking a photo that fairly reflects the colour I'm seeing, in general the flash tends to wash the orange colouration out, but over expose and the resulting image is too orange compared to what you see in the flesh. On top of that, the same photo can look very different when viewed on two different computer monitors. So bearing that caveat in mind.....

On the down side, they're not growing as quickly as I'd like, and having made the cross to get koi with better finnage, the one with the most intense colour looks like this....

But overall I'm hopeful that I'll get some breeders with good potential from this lot.

Your male Platinum Ghost is brilliant, here's hoping that some of his young developt his finnage.

Out crosses are an excellent plan. I think problems associated with too much inbreeding are often overlooked and under-rated. I try to maintain detailed records for all my batches, so that the degree of inbreeding that will result from any particular pairing can be calculated. Whilst I accept that sibling x sibling crosses are often useful, and on occation I have used them myself, in general I try to ensure that my fish are no more inbred than would be the case for offspring of half-siblings.

You've got some beauties there. Would some of them be het pb? Personally I would like to see a little more black as well as orange coverage. What are you hoping for?

Hi Helen,
they're all het(erozygous) for pb, since Dad is a platinum marble ghost (Gm/g - S/+ - pb/pb) he can only pass on pb genes to his offspring.

Personally I would like to see a little more black as well as orange coverage.
Fish that are Gm/g usually have less marbling than fish that are Gm/Gm, since both parents are Gm/g only 25% of the offspring will be Gm/Gm.
Beyond choosing Gm/Gm breeders to give you more black coverage, it is possible to select for fish that have more, or less black coverage, and over time to produce fish that best fit your aesthetic tastes.
as they grow, koi often lose some of their black, so I'd agree that some of these could do with more black. Another factor that is probably mostly down to random chance is how the black is distributed. I think the mother is about right in terms of amount of black, although a little more would be nice, but the position of the black is unbalanced; IMO she could do with a bit more black in the dorsal, and maybe a bit of black near the ventral fins.

All that said, the mother is a half sister to "George" the koi in this thread keeping me waiting if I do manage to get young from him, I'm hoping that they would make good partners to some of these.

Beautiful parents and some cracking youngsters, I sure there's potential for some very nice koi in the future. Atm, I'm finding it very frustrating trying to get pairs with the right genetics for my master plans, I either have all males or all females with the right combo, I'm sure its sods law at its cruelist!

...and when you do have the right combination, they usually don't like each other!

I'm not sure about the soon!, some of the best breeders over there have been working on them for decades, but I'm sure we''l get there eventually.
