My Red Devil Project

Post  Ghipsi on Wed 15 Feb 2012, 22:22

Ok, I have been trying to grow on stock to produce reaaly good couverage on Koi angels.
Dad is a Red Devil & mum is a Koi of unknown origins but she looked as if she had something hidden in her Smile
Anyway here is how far I am, the little-uns are from a younger batch. Lisa

Hi Lisa,
There's no doubting that those are lovely fish, good colour, nice finnage and excellent body shape; but I'm still very puzzled as to what makes a "red devil", a "red devil". Is it simply a marketing name for a well coloured koi? or do they have some defining charicteristic? if so, what is it?

Good luck with this project. We need some high coverage koi over here. They are practically non existent.

Its a great project Lisa! The Americans have some great high coverage koi, it would be nice if we could create something along those lines over here!

Hi Lisa can you tell me at what age or size did your red devil young start to show there colouring. The reason i ask this is because today i went into a local fish shop that i have known for many a year of which i get on really well with the owner as i have sold him many young fish & he told me that he had just had a 1st order from a new czech supplier & in the order he had a box of Marbel angels & in the box was a bag marked red devils,so he told the supplier he had received them but not orderd them & the supplier told him not to worrie he could keep them free of charge, but as they were only small he put them in a tank out the back,so i asked if i could have a look & there was 6 fish between 5p & 20p size the 20p sized fish are showing some nice colour but the smaller 5p sized fish are still a bit pale with a hint of red starting to show. But to top it all off the owner told me i could have them for £5 as he wanted the tank for something else so i didnt need telling twice & i shoved a fiver in his hand before he changed his mind & they are now in my QT tank & i have a smile on my face Very Happy .

Nice one Very Happy , they show colour from as early as 4 weeks and the colour seems to increase with age, with the Orange turning redder as they get 50p size upwards.
They defiatly show colour a heck of a lot earlier than any Koi I have bred in the past.
