twitching fins...

Post  jaymiller on Sun 06 May 2012, 15:06

hi all,

my breeding pair laid eggs about 5 days ago and they were fine. the eggs got eaten up as most were white. for the past 2 days my female has been doing some twitching and bullying the male a little. the bullying is really minor to be honest nothing to worry about at all. but the twitching of the fins i have no clue about. anyone got ideas?

thanks.

Nothing to worry about. My pair do that when I approach them guarding their fry or eggs. I think it's a warning to stay away.

If she is holding her anal and dorsal fins wide and flicking the vertral fins forward, as Helen say's, this is normal behaviour.
It is either used to warn fry that there's danger about and to get them to gather closer, or as a threat to another fish to stay away.
As they flick the fins the fish is articulating the bone in it's socket making a clicking noise, this is audiable under water, but occationally can even be heard by a watching owner!
