The Worst Part!

Post  Pterophyllum on Tue 10 Apr 2012, 00:34

I don't like having to put sick fish down, or having to cull any mishapen, deformed youngsters, or for that matter the few runts from each batch who simply refuse to grow, but it's a necessary part of producing good quality fish, and it's something I can live with.....

....what I find really difficult, is letting go of those fish that realistically aren't going to get used in my breeding programs, and even harder, those fish that have been used, but are unlikely to be used again.
I've just done a quick count up, and in the last 12 months I've had 13 successful batches from 11 different pairings, of these some fish had more than 1 partner, so in total 19 fish were used. Now admittedly I've tried more fish than this, and some pairings haven't worked out, but realistically keeping more than 40 adult fish as potential breeders seems pointless. Yet looking around my tanks I must have over 100 adults/young adult fish that I'm hanging on to as potential breeders. So tonight, after serious thought, rational analysis and careful deliberation I have managed to identify nine fish that I'm prepared to part with, and a tenth, that I would part with except it's got a deformed tail and is therefore unsaleable, and I can't put it down for sentimental reasons. This has taken me hours of heart wrenching analysis, and I've managed to identify just nine! I really most try harder!
My aim is to reduce down to just two holding tanks for adult/young adults and thus free up enough tank space for the large numbers of babies I currently have coming on.....
I must try harder!

Yes, its always a difficult decision on what to do with stock that is no longer needed for breeding programs Crying or Very sad
But..... I'm sure there are others who would love new additions to breeding programs Very Happy , I for one usualy re-pair individuals not needed and put them up for sale or even swop with other breeders Very Happy

To be honest, I usually just take them along to the shop, big angels usually sell faster than I can provide them. No, my problem is not with finding them good homes, it's coming to terms with having to do so!
That said, with this latest load there may be some particularily desirable fish, so once I've decided what's going, I will make sure I let people know what's available.....

.....just, don't hold your breath for me to make a decision
