Spawning in QT

Post  uk bulldog on Mon 19 Mar 2012, 10:03

Hi i picked up a new pair on wednesday & they are spawning in the QT tank,i dont want to keep this spawn but was thinking of letting them go through the motions so i could see what sort of parents they are.
I have a couple of questions & was hopeing i could get some answers.
Q1.Would it be ok to use METH BLUE in the tank to help prevent any fungus etc while i still have the pair in the tank?
Q2.What types could i expect from this pair?(Male) PB SMOKEY PEARLSCALE &
(Female) PB SILVER PEARLSCALE.

Paul.

Congrats Paul. It's testamentto your hard work if a new pair spawn in the QT tank. Are they single or double dose pb?

Unless they are hiding anything (like gold or albino) you'll get 50% like mum and 50% like dad.

OK Paul, the only only extra thing I did was to resize your images, I use a handy program to resize images called 'Windows Live Photo Gallery', and it will resize a pile of images with one click Very Happy
Nice Angels by the way! Lisa

Hi Paul,
I think that male is hiding a zebra gene, the clue is in the pattern of striations (stripes) in the dorsal fin. They're closer together, and in the first photo, towards the tip of the dorsal some of the striations run vertically.
Smokey + Zebra = leopard, so he's a blue leopard, this means you will get...
25% blue zebra
25% blue silver
25% blue smokey
25% blue leopard

Well worth the wait Paul. They are a beautiful pair. I think I need to get some pearls! Smile

Rob, I too can see the fin pattern, but it's a lot more subtle than in a leopard without pb.

Well first of all thank you Lisa for adding the pics for me i'm glad someone knows what they are doing.
Rob thank you for takeing your time to have a look as your knowledge is always welcome as i wouldnt of had a clue regards the Zebra gene in the male but it sure does add to the mix if the spawn makes it.Mum & Dad are still faning the eggs this morning & not one has gone white so i have my fingers crossed on this lot.I'm glad you like them Helen & if all goes well i will send you a couple.

Thanks Paul. It's a big spawn, and as you say, no white eggs. It's looking good for this one.

The pattern is very subtle, but I don't think it has anything to do with the pb gene, just the natural variation from individual to individual, I've had pb fish with very clear zebra dorsals, and non pb fish where the pattern was even less obvious than Paul's fish

I just assumed the pb gene washed out the pattern.

Haveing got home from work i took a look at the spawn to find that around a dozen eggs mainly to oneside of the spawn are a differant colour to the rest they look lighter but are not white, would it be that they didn't get fertalised or could it be something else?

If they are lighter and transparent, not white and opaque, they are still viable. May just be a different phenotype.

You could well be right Helen as the eggs are all still there without any change this morning so cam only assume they are all ok. Very Happy

While doing my rutine maintenance i was being attacked by both parents as norm when the female went over to the spawning site & just attacked the eggs sending them all over the place leaveing about 10 or so untouched & since then she just looks at where the eggs were as if to say what have i done Crying or Very sad ,i have never had a pair do this before so im totaly shocked & guess i will just have to wait until the next spawn.up untill this all was going really well for them.

Did she eat the eggs or just knock them everywhere? She will lay again soon in 10 days or so & they are much better at looking after larger batches than small batches.

Hi Lisa at first she knocked them all over the place then between her & the male they ate the lot, but i have learnt one thing from this & that is she doesnt take kindly to any body in her tank while she has eggs so i have now got some stiff tubeing approx 6 inches longer than the depth of the tank so my hands dont have to go in the water & hope this will do the job, if not i'm sure i will work out a way of cleaning up IE if she does it again i will not use one of my home made spawning site's but a cone & cage.
